May 30th - Beach and Sunburn

We had planned to go to Lanikai beach this afternoon after a morning in the house, however after Baggage had made a friend on Kailua yesterday she was keen to go back there in the morning, as the main reason for going to the beach was for Baggage we are happy to switch to Kailua, though it will mean a reasonably early start as the parking lot there gets full very early on.

We head down to the beach just around 10am, Baggage is straight in the water, Lisa and I sit on the beach for a short while, but soon join her. We all play around in the water, which is very warm, for about two hours. We take in body boards and our snorkel gear, Lisa and I had hoped to get a chance to snorkel close to a turtle, we did see one swimming not too far away from us, but could not see him under the water. The water was churning quite a bit and as a result the visibility was very poor, we did not manage to swim with the turtles. We did have a great time in the water however, possibly for a little too long considering there was no cloud cover and the temperature was high 80s.

We got out of the water and decided to eat our lunch in the shade, the lunch had been in the cool box in the car since 10 this morning, Baggage was OK as she had peanut butter sandwiches, Lisa and I had cheese however, which was now seriously melted cheese!

After lunch we stayed in the shade and read for about an hour, then we went back in the water for a quick swim, however at this point we noticed Baggages legs were a little pink. We got out of the water and decided it was best to get her back to the house and in the shade. When we got there we found she was not the only one who had caught the sun, I was burnt across the shoulders and Lisa quite badly burnt on her back. I left the two girls at the house and went out to get some after sun, I also got some higher factor sun cream, we were on factor 30, I took us up to factor 50.

Back at the house we all had cooling showers or baths and piled on the after sun.

The plan had been to go out tonight and get a McDonalds take out and eat it on the beach watching the sun go down. Neither Lisa nor Baggage now fancied this, they both felt quite shattered after their time on the beach, so I decided to get a Chinese take-out. I drove down to Kailua Beach and walked around the area taking photos and watching the sun go down, before heading into Kailua to get the Chinese. The Chinese was far from the best we have ever had, we had Garlic chicken and sweet and sour pork to share between us, I will not be going there again.

None of us had a late night tonight, but I did manage a couple of bottles of Longboard before I checked in.
